Systematic and Other Reviews

Scoping reviews

Scoping reviews can be conducted to meet various objectives including:

  • examine the size and scope of the evidence on a topic or question
  • determine the value of undertaking a systematic review
  • summarise evidence on a topic or question
  • identify gaps in a particular field.

The steps involved in conducting a scoping review are mostly the same as those for a systematic review (see Planning, Searching, Screening & appraisal). The main differences between these two types of review are:

  1. The purpose of the review (as noted above)
  2. The reporting of the review

Reporting a scoping review

PRISMA have developed an extension for the reporting of scoping reviews. The extension includes a checklist, explanatory paper, and tip sheets to guide in the reporting of scoping reviews.
