EndNote: Information and User Guide

EndNote

EndNote is a reference management software for both desktop and online, available to WA Health employees.

Use this resource as a step-by-step guide to gain mastery of the software, by working through the menu on the left-hand side.

Alternatively, use this guide as a ready reference to support you as you use EndNote.

EndNote is a software program that helps you to manage your references to information resources including journal articles, conference papers, government documents, book chapters, etc.

You can use EndNote to:

  • Store and organise your references
  • Store PDFs of articles with the relevant references
  • Add citations in Word documents through the Cite While You Write function
  • Add bibliographies in Word documents
  • Format citations and bibliographies in a wide variety of published referencing styles
  • Share your references with others
  • Identify retracted articles

Note: EndNote will not correct your references if the data within them is wrong. It is important that you know the requirements of your referencing style and that you check your final citations and bibliography, even when using EndNote.

EndNote works with Library resources.

  • When you are searching databases like Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO or Google Scholar you will be able to export your results to EndNote.
  • You can harvest PDFs from the Library collection to go with the references in your library using the Find Full Text function.  Note that you will need to change your preference settings for this to work.

The Library provides support in the use of EndNote.

There are other reference management software systems that you may wish to explore. Most offer basic functionality via a free account and a subscription model for additional features. You can access some of these tools via the links below.

The following guides may be useful in deciding which reference management system works best for you.
