EndNote: Information and User Guide

Exporting your references

You may need to export references from EndNote to upload or import to other applications. You can export selected references, or entire libraries using EndNote's export function. 

Export options

To export an EndNote library or selected references for use in Excel, it must be exported as a Tab Delimited File. 

  1. In your EndNote library, select the references you would like to export.
  2. Go to File Export
  3. A dialog box will appear
    • Select the location where you want to save the file
    • Name your file
    • In "Save as type" choose "Text File (*.txt)"
    • Select "Tab Delimited" for Output Style
    • Click save
  4. in Excel go to the Data Tab

Windows:

  1. Select from Text/CSV
  2. Select the .txt file you saved earlier and click Load. 

MacOS:

  1. Select Get Data (Power Query)
  2. Select from Text/CSV
  3. Select the .txt file you saved earlier
  4. Click Get Data and then select Next

Some applications, e.g. Covidence, require references to be in XML format before you can upload them. The instructions below show the steps to export references from your EndNote library to an XML file. 

  1. In your EndNote library, select the references you would like to export.
  2. Go to File Export
  3. A dialog box will appear
    • Select the location where you want to save the file
    • Name your file
    • In "save file as type" choose "XML (*.xml)"
    • Select the appropriate referencing style for Output Style
    • Click Save

 

Some applications, e.g. RevMan, Mendeley, require references to be in RIS file format before you can upload them. The instructions below show the steps to export references from your EndNote library to a RIS file. 

  1. In your EndNote library, select the references you would like to export.
  2. Go to File Export
  3. A dialog box will appear
    • Select the location where you want to save the file
    • Name your file and add .ris at the end e.g. Example library.ris
    • In "save file as type" choose "Text File (*.txt)"
    • For Output Style select "Select Another Style"
    • Select RefMan (RIS) Export
    • Click Choose
    • Click Save
