EndNote: Information and User Guide

About Cite While You Write

  • The EndNote Cite While You Write (CWYW) function can be used to quickly and easily add citations to a document (e.g. Microsoft Word) on both a PC and Mac

  • The CWYW function will also generate your bibliography/reference list in the referencing style of your choice

  • When EndNote is installed, it will automatically add an EndNote toolbar to your Word program.

  • To access the EndNote toolbar in Word, click on the EndNote 21 tab

Troubleshooting the CWYW plug in

If the ribbon only displays EndNote (with no 21 after it):

  1. In Word click on the current EndNote tab in the ribbon, then select Preferences
  2. From the pop-up window select the Application tab and ensure the dropdown option selected is Endnote (not EndNote online). Click OK
  3. Close down Word
  4. Reopen Word and access the EndNote 21 tab
