EndNote: Information and User Guide

About Cite While You Write

The EndNote Cite While You Write (CWYW) function can be used to quickly and easily add citations to a document (e.g. Microsoft Word) on both a PC and Mac. The CWYW function will also generate your bibliography/reference list in the referencing style of your choice.

When EndNote is installed, it will automatically add an EndNote toolbar to your desktop Word program. If you are using Word Online you will need to link your EndNote Web account with EndNote 21, please see EndNote 21 and Word Online below for more information on using EndNote 21 with Word Online.

To access the EndNote toolbar in Word, click on the EndNote 21 tab.

Troubleshooting the CWYW plug in

If the ribbon only displays EndNote (with no 21 after it):

  1. In Word click on the current EndNote tab in the ribbon, then select Preferences
  2. From the pop-up window select the Application tab and ensure the dropdown option selected is Endnote (not EndNote online). Click OK
  3. Close down Word
  4. Reopen Word and access the EndNote 21 tab

CWYW and Word Online

The Cite While You Write (CWYW) function is also available for Word Online (MS 365) for EndNote 21 users.

CWYW requires an EndNote Web account activated with EndNote 21. If you have not registered for an online account with EndNote 21, the instructions here will guide you.

If the CWYW plug in does not automatically appear when you link your EndNote Web account you will need to request access to the user group via an eHFN-030 form:

  1. Access the eHFN-030 via the ICT Service Portal
  2. Complete the top section of the form with your details as you usually would.
  3. In the free-text box at the bottom of the form include the following wording:

"Please add me to the "EUC-EndNote-Online-Users" group as I require use of the Cite While You Write (CWYW) function for Word Online (MS 365). "

  1. Submit the form.
