EndNote: Information and User Guide

Formatting a bibliography

Once you have inserted EndNote references into a Word document, you can create a bibliography using your chosen reference style.

  • Referencing styles (e.g. Vancouver, Harvard, APA 7) are called output styles in EndNote.
  • EndNote offers over 5000 output styles, with the option to edit and create your own style.
  • Only a limited number of styles are loaded to your computer when EndNote is first installed, however, more can be downloaded from the EndNote website.

You can modify or create a new output style if there isn't one that meets your needs.

  1. From the Style dropdown menu, select the required referencing style (e.g. Vancouver, APA). A number of styles will already be listed there by default (such as APA7th/Chicago etc.)

  1. If the style you need is not listed in the drop-down menu, click on Select Another Style (see above), select the desired style (e.g., Vancouver) then Choose (see below)

When citations are inserted into your Word document EndNote will automatically build your bibliography. EndNote will format the references to match the output style you have selected.

  • To change the output style, select another style from the Style drop-down menu in the EndNote 21 Word tab
  • To format your bibliography, click on the arrow next to Bibliography in the EndNote 21 Word tab

From the Layout tab you can:

  • Select a different font or font size
  • Add a title for the bibliography
  • Change the line spacing
  • Change the indentations

To remove unwanted references:

  1. Click on Edit & Manage Citation(s)
  2. Find the reference you would like to remove, select remove citation from the dropdown menu
  3. Click OK
