Creating references from PDFs

EndNote can automatically create references for PDF files for articles and book chapters that have a digital object identifier (DOI).

Note that where a reference cannot be created by file import, the PDF file will be attached to an empty reference for you to manually add data to, see Manually creating references for tips.

To import a PDF:

  1. Go to File > Import > File
  2. Click on Choose, navigate to and select your saved PDF > Open
  3. Select PDF as the Import Option > Import
  4. The reference will be in the ‘Imported References’ group with the attached PDF
  5. Check that all the reference details are correct and make any edits required

To import multiple PDFs:

  1. Go to File > Import > Folder
  2. Click on Choose, navigate to and select your saved folder of PDFs > Open
  3. Select PDF as the Import Option > Import
  4. The references will be in the ‘Imported References’ group with the attached PDFs
  5. Check that all the reference details are correct and make any edits required
