Registering a research protocol

It is good practice to register a protocol for your systematic review or clinical trial to:

  • inform other researchers of your review
  • reduce duplication of review
  • provide opportunities for collaboration
  • provide transparency, enable reproducibility and reduce study bias

In some cases, registering your protocol is mandated under the NHMRC's National Statement of Ethical Conduct in Human Research:

"For any research project that prospectively assigns human participants or groups of humans to one or more health-related interventions to evaluate the effects on health outcomes, researchers must register the project as a clinical trial on a publicly accessible register complying with international standards...before the recruitment of the first participant." - National Statement of Ethical Conduct in Human Research
