Citation chasing

Once you have found relevant references for your topic, it may be useful to undertake some citation chasing to identify additional relevant references.

There are two types of citation chasing

  1. Backward citation chasing - looking at the references cited in a relevant paper (or papers)
  2. Forward citation chasing - looking for articles that have cited a relevant paper (or papers)

Citation chasing tools

An automation tool that allows for bulk chasing of citations

  • Can do backward and forward citation chasing
  • Works best with DOIs or PMIDs
  • Can upload RIS files from EndNote

Allows forward citation chasing only at individual article level.

  1. Search by title or PMID for the article 
  2. Click on the Cited by link on the right-hand side

  1. Search by title for the article 
  2. For forward citation chasing, click on the number of citations
  3. For backward citation chasing, click on the number of cited references

Allows forward citation chasing only at individual article level.
